Help! Why Is My Maple Changing Color Already?

Do you have a Maple tree that is beginning to change to its fall color already? Well you're not alone. The family of Maple trees most commonly exhibit premature fall color. But why? This early change is a signal that the trees are suffering from some form of stress. Maples, especially young Maple trees, can be sensitive to changes in their environment, and they commonly show early color change in years when summer rains are heavier than normal (like this year). Another cause for stress could be if the tree has been planted a little too deep. Planting too deep basically "smothers" the roots, which reduces the amount of oxygen in the root zone and leads to stress.

So what can you do about this problem? Well, unfortunately there's not much you can do about mother nature, but if it has been a rainy year, be sure that you're not giving your tree additional manual waterings. And if you have an irrigation system, make sure that your trees (not just Maples) are not getting sprayed. This can quickly lead to over-watering and can cause a lot of unnecessary stress on your trees. If your tree is planted too deep, you may need to dig it up and raise it to the appropriate level. Of course, this treatment is only recommended for trees that have been in the ground a short time; digging up a mature tree may cause more stress than a tree can handle. Be sure to check with a professional before attempting to raise your tree.
