What's Hot In July... The weather is definitely hot, but there are a lot of plants that are looking hot right now too! So if your garden is looking a little blah these days, here are a few plant varieties that can spice things up during the warmest months of the summer: Hibiscus: Try the hardy shrub form (also called Rose of Sharon) if you are looking for a deciduous shrub that will get about 6-8' tall and wide. Hibiscus begin blooming in July and will give you outstanding color through the fall. Be sure to plant in full sun for the best blooms! Three varieties to keep an eye out for are Aphrodite (dark pink), Lavender Chiffon (blue-purple), and Red Heart (white with a red center). Click here to see a picture of the Red Heart Hibiscus. Hydrangea: These popular deciduous shrubs will add wonderful summer color to your landscape. Hydrangeas come in many sizes and varieties, so it is easy to find one that is perfect for your garden. Flower colors range from white to pink to blue and all shades in between. Flower color in some varieties can be controlled by the acidity of the soil. Remember to plant Hydrangeas in partial shade (an area where they will get morning sun and afternoon shade is ideal). Click here to see a picture of the Endless Summer Hydrangea. Coneflower: The bold colors of these perennials can liven up any garden! You'll find white, yellow, pink, purple, and orange coneflowers - and it seems that new colors and varieties are introduced every year! Heights range from 12" up to 36", so be sure to ask or check the tags to be positive that you are getting the right variety to fit your space. Coneflowers begin blooming in mid summer and last into the fall, and remember, full sun is best. Questions on anything you've read here? It's New! Soil Testing For Your Yard If you're having trouble getting your plants or grass to flourish and suspect that you might have bad soil, we can help! Bring in at least one soil sample (from 4" below the surface) and we will test it for you. The cost for a 1-2 site analysis is $10.95, or a 3-4 site analysis is $19.95. This will include pH testing as well as nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium testing. We will also include recommendations on how to amend the soil. For small garden beds, 1-2 samples will be sufficient, but for lawns, it is best to bring in 4 samples (one from each corner of the lawn). Please allow 1-2 days for us to complete the testing and compile the results. Click here to read more about the importance of nutrient-balanced soil. |
